You need to talk with a counselor in the Financial Aid Office at your college. If the study abroad program is one that is sponsored through your college, you should be able to use any aid that you would have received to attend your college oversees. However, it can only be used if there is a consortium agreement with the other college in Japan and the credits you will be receiving will be transferred back into your college program. You might also want to talk with your Study Abroad office.

Yes. The only money that cannot be used are work study awards and you may not be able to use a specific state fund. For example, in Colorado the Colorado Opportunity Fund cannot be used for study abroad.

If you qualify for federal grants and loans under FAFSA and your school accepts them, yes.

The first step is to go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/FOTWWebApp/FSLookupServlet and see if your school is accepted. If they are, you are good to go.
